Apple’s been known to cover all its bases in the patent department, meaning this is certainly no guarantee we’ll be seeing light-up iPods in the near future, but all the same we can’t ignore the fact that a patent just popped up that has Apple postulating on backlit click wheels.
Actually I really like the click wheels and I would like to see the touch return to a click wheel. I find it extremely annoying trying to rewind or fast forward accurately enough. Using fast forward and rewind can take a very long time to find the correct part of the track and if I try to locate a certain position using the tiny one inch bar it just jumps through large portions of the recording. The technology certainly needs improving.

While having a comet of light following your finger around the wheel is certainly interesting — if potentially annoying — things get more intriguing with the possibility of multitouch, but the patent isn’t clear enough to tell if that’s exactly what Apple is driving at. It’s all well and good, but in these heady touchscreen days, are clickwheels slowly going the way of the dinosaur button?
I hope not because anybody who has a finger larger than your average 11-year-old has trouble with the navigation. Maybe one answer would be an application which emulates the regular iPod click wheel on a touch screen. Although this doesn’t solve the problem of fat fingers! One of the reasons the click wheel is so popular is because it can be operated without having to view the screen which is a big bonus for many users. From a purely functional point of view you don’t need little lights showing you where your finger is. After all you can see where your finger is! But this little feature should please Star Trek fans among us!
